Leading from the Front: Restarting my Own Fitness Journey

For a long time, I’ve been the coach on the sidelines.

I’ve written the programs.
I’ve cheered the wins.
I’ve adjusted the form.
I’ve encouraged people through the days they didn’t want to show up.

And somewhere along the way, while helping everyone else build their best self… I slowly stopped building mine.

That’s not easy to admit as a gym owner.

But it’s honest.

When You Pour Into Everyone Else

If you lead, serve, coach, parent, or run a business, you probably understand this.

You wake up early.
You stay late.
You answer messages.
You solve problems.
You make sure everyone else is taken care of.

And eventually you look up and realize your own workouts have become inconsistent. Your own nutrition has slipped. Your own goals have been sitting on the back burner.

Not because you don’t care.
But because you care so much about everyone else.

That’s been me.

Why That Changes Now

I can’t ask people to commit to themselves if I’m not doing the same. I can’t preach consistency without practicing it. I can’t talk about discipline and growth while letting my own standards quietly fade.

So I’m starting (again).

Not because I’m at rock bottom.
Not because I have something dramatic to prove.
But because I believe in leading from the front.

And if that decision motivates even one other person to start, restart, or keep going — it’s worth it.

What This Will Look Like

Over the coming weeks and months, I’ll be sharing:

  • My workouts

  • My weekly totals (lifting, running, cycling, etc.)

  • The wins

  • The missed days

  • The real-life balance of business, family, and fitness

Not for attention.

For accountability.

And maybe for permission — permission for someone else to say, “If he’s starting again, I can too.”

To not overwhelm the number of blog posts here, I will be doing most of the sharing on my personal Instagram page: jessecummings_

You Don’t Need a Perfect Start

Most people delay starting their fitness journey because they want:

  • The perfect plan

  • The perfect schedule

  • The perfect motivation

  • The perfect timing

Here’s the truth: none of that exists for most people.

What does exist is today.

Your first week might not be impressive. Everyone has a different starting line.
Your numbers might not wow anyone. That isn’t the point.
You might feel behind.

That’s okay.

Consistency beats intensity.
Progress beats perfection.
Action beats intention.

Every single time.

The Real Goal

This isn’t about six-pack abs.
It’s not about lifting certain numbers.
It’s not about chasing some unrealistic highlight reel.
In the (slightly modified) famous words of Coach Bennet, “This is about fitness and this is not about fitness.”

It’s about integrity.

It’s about being the kind of person who follows through.
The kind of person who practices what they preach.
The kind of leader who doesn’t just talk about growth — but lives it.

Fitness has always been bigger than the gym floor. It’s discipline. It’s energy. It’s resilience. It’s confidence. It’s self-respect.

And those things spill into every other area of life.

If You’ve Been Waiting…

Maybe you’ve been waiting for:

  • A sign

  • A better season

  • More confidence

  • More time

Consider this your sign.

You don’t need to be extreme.
You don’t need to overhaul your entire life overnight.
You just need to start.

Walk.
Lift.
Stretch.
Track one week. Then track two.
Drink more water.
Show up.
Set goals and work to reach them.

Momentum is built, not found.

I’m stepping back into my own journey — publicly — because I believe leadership requires visibility.

If you want to follow along, I’ll be posting progress and updates. If you want to join me, even better. Reach out and let’s get going.

And if this inspires just one person to take that first step, then it’s already worth it.

Let’s build our best selves - together.
